Dragon’s Dogma 2 will be getting an endgame hard mode difficulty in the future ‘for seasoned players’

Dragon’s Dogma 2 will be getting its first big proper chunk of DLC soon, and in addition to nixing those weird microtransactions that did more harm to word-of-mouth than the actual game, it’s also slated to be getting a hard mode difficulty for players who have everything maxed out.

That’s per a Q&A featured on the game’s Steam page, where game director Kento Kinoshita stated: “We’re working on a Hard Mode that will provide a satisfying challenge for seasoned players whose stats have reached, or are approaching, the level cap.”

The actual hard mode itself doesn’t have a release window, but it is coming, with producer Naoto Oyama adding: “Please stay tuned for further updates regarding the details of Hard Mode and its release window.”

As for whether Dark Arisen itself will provide a meaty challenge for gamers looking to get thrashed about again, Kinoshita writes: “Both the Forsaken Dominion and Lost Rites are expansion contents, so we’ve designed them to offer battles with an even greater sense of tension and challenge than the main game.

“We’re aware that there’s a very wide range of player level across the community, so with that in mind, we’re adjusting the balance so that everyone can enjoy the experience—whether they’re just starting their adventure, still progressing through the game, or have already completed multiple playthroughs.”

Kinoshita adds that, even in the normal mode of the DLC, “the difficulty gradually ramps up as players progress through the expansion content, with enemy encounters becoming increasingly challenging along the way. As players reach the middle and later stages of the content, we’ve balanced it so that even those who have already hit the stat cap can still enjoy a meaningful level of challenge.”

So, to clarify, Dark Arisen will have endgame-appropriate fights—the future hard mode will simply add another layer of self-flagellation to the game which, despite some changes to its thorniness, is still known for being kind of hostile in a fun, wrestling-you-in-the-mud kind of way. I’m glad that those who’ve nonetheless tamed the game’s grisly systems will have some real challenges in the future, however.
