UNDERGROUNDED Launches July 3, Retro Puzzle Adventure Heads to Steam Next Week

Retro gaming fans have another indie adventure to keep an eye on this summer. UNDERGROUNDED, an atmospheric puzzle adventure inspired by decades of American culture and classic arcade games, officially launches on Steam for PC on July 3.

Developed by Game Studio and published by room6, the game blends environmental puzzles, nostalgic locations, memorable characters, and retro-inspired gameplay into a unique underground journey that feels unlike most modern puzzle adventures.

A Journey Beneath Manhattan

The story follows Scott, a young man whose marriage proposal ends in disappointment after his girlfriend rejects him. During the emotional aftermath, he accidentally drops the engagement ring into a storm drain.

Instead of simply disappearing, the ring falls into an enormous underground world where fragments of American history have somehow merged together. As Scott descends deeper, ordinary sewers transform into movie theaters, Old West towns, historic landmarks, and other nostalgic settings inspired by different eras of American culture.

His mission is simple on paper: recover the lost ring. Along the way, however, he discovers a strange underground civilization filled with mysteries and people searching for things they have lost themselves.

Retro America Becomes One Giant Dungeon

Rather than using traditional fantasy settings, UNDERGROUNDED builds its world around iconic moments from America’s past. Every area reflects a different cultural period, creating environments that constantly surprise players as they move deeper underground.

The game mixes exploration with environmental storytelling, giving each location its own personality while rewarding players who enjoy discovering small visual details and hidden references.

Puzzle Solving With A Helpful Canary

Scott isn’t completely alone during his adventure.

A cheerful talking canary accompanies him throughout the journey, offering hints whenever puzzles become too challenging. Instead of forcing players to search online for solutions, the companion provides gentle guidance that helps keep the adventure moving without removing the satisfaction of solving puzzles.

Arcade Games Become Your Greatest Weapon

One of UNDERGROUNDED’s most creative mechanics involves retro arcade cabinets scattered throughout the dungeon.

Playing these classic-inspired games doesn’t simply offer a fun distraction. Instead, completing them changes the surrounding world and creates opportunities to overcome dangerous bosses that block Scott’s progress.

The developers describe these sequences as loving homages to legendary arcade games from the 1980s, adding another layer of nostalgia for longtime gamers.

Helping Others Along The Way

Scott isn’t the only person trapped within this mysterious underground world.

Throughout the adventure, players will encounter other individuals searching for treasured possessions they’ve lost. Completing their stories and helping them recover what matters most unlocks additional moments throughout Scott’s own emotional journey.

The focus on personal stories gives the adventure a more heartfelt tone beyond simply solving puzzles and defeating bosses.
