Do you like climbing games? Of course you do, they’re all the rage right now, and long may their reign continue. Going free solo is fun and all, but you know what they say: “If you want to go fast go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” From developer brothers Joe Fender & Andrew Fender and (aptly named) publisher Future Friends Games comes Sunset Summit, a co-op climbing game that combines the whimsy of Peak and the challenge of Cairn.
You may be thinking this game looks familiar, and you’d be right. Sunset Summit has undergone a rebrand. Rise is dead, long live Sunset Summit. In it, you and up to seven other players have to trek all the way up a big, bad mountain, reaching checkpoints as you go so a fall isn’t too devastating. It’ll still suck, though, so try not to.
Sunset Summit has all the usual gear you’d use in real life to climb: ropes, climbing axes, pogo sticks… Pogo sticks? And delivery drones? Well, there’s that whimsy I was writing about. You’ll need it all, as you’re not just climbing up sheer rock, but floating platforms, too.
In the trailer just shown at the PC Gaming Show, we see a bunch of buds take on the challenge together. They employ the aforementioned tools as well as some boomer booster pills that make you jump super far. There are also baked beans. I’m not sure what they do, but as a Brit, I appreciate the inclusion.
Just like Peak, there’s proximity chat and even walkie talkies so you can stay in touch with your pals as you climb. They’re going to come in handy, especially if people jump the queue and go up ahead of others.
If you do prefer to go it alone though, don’t worry, because Sunset Summit also supports offline solo play. If you like the look of it, go and play the demo on Steam.
