Well, there it is, the Beast of Reincarnation itself. We sent a crew to Japan to give you another glimpse of Game Freak’s upcoming action RPG ahead of its August 4 launch, and we learned a whole lot about protagonist Emma and the Blight that’s affecting the world.
Game director Kota Furushima explained that the world has been ravaged by the Blight, a malignance stemming from the titular beast of reincarnation that corrupts all living things, from plants to animals and even Emma herself; it transforms them into Malefacts, and our doggo pal Koo is one as well—so, they can’t all be bad.
Emma can cross large distances and climb up high by summoning a vine from her arm, all thanks to the Blight. However, she doesn’t have any memories or emotions, which is why the humans who are surviving this apocalypse reject and fear her; they treat her like a “corrupted husk,” Furushima said. It’s unclear if the Blight is responsible for her condition or if she was like that before becoming a Malefact.
Portraying a character with no emotions is a tough task, but, unlike its previous games, Game Freak is opting to use voice actors. Emma is voiced by Yui Ishikawa. Furushima speaks highly of her, but her career history speaks for itself. Well, she speaks for herself since she’s a voice actor—you know what I mean. She portrayed 2B in Nier: Automata, and she voices characters in Guilty Gear Strive, Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, Monster Hunter Rise Starbreak, and much, much more.
Also in the cast is Akio Otsuka, a legendary actor who’s been in more movies, games, and TV shows than I can list, but some highlights include the original 1996 Ghost in the Shell and Cowboy Bebop.
Beast of Reincarnation launches August 4. You can pre-order it on Steam now.
