Tom Kane, voice actor whose work spanned Star Wars: KOTOR to The Powerpuff Girls’ dad, dies aged 64

Tom Kane, the prolific voice actor with credits across Star Wars, the Lord of the Rings, Batman, and plenty else besides, has died aged 64, his talent agency reports.

You have almost certainly encountered Tom Kane’s work before, if not in the 100+ videogames he appeared in, then in any number of movies or TV shows.

I’m fairly certain my first contact with Kane’s work was as the voice of Jedi master Vandar Tokare in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (a role he reprised in KOTOR 2), but you may well know him from Shadows of the Empire, Grim Fandango, the Rocksteady Batman games, or—I suspect this will be the case for many of you—as the voice of Professor Utonium from The Powerpuff Girls.

“From his unforgettable performances in Star Wars to countless animated series, documentaries, and games, Tom brought wisdom, strength, humor, and heart to every role he touched,” wrote Kane’s agency, Galactic Productions. “His voice became part of our lives, our memories, and the stories we carry with us.”

Tributes have likewise poured in from Kane’s fellow actors. Tara Strong, voice of The Powerpuff Girls’ Bubbles, wrote on Instagram, “They say there’s no such thing as a perfect man… those people never met Tom Kane.

“Everything he did, he did to perfection, but never in a predictable way. Tom always found something deeper, more creative, more thoughtful, weird, fun & unique. Brilliant. Giving. Funny. Supportive. Kind. There was no one like HIM.”

EG Daily and Catherine Cavadini, Buttercup and Blossom’s actors, likewise paid tribute: “We love you Tom and your beautiful wife Cindy and children. The world will miss you,” wrote Daily. “Tom leaves behind an extraordinary legacy, countless unforgettable performances, and so many people who loved him dearly. But I think I will miss my dear Professor most of all,” wrote Cavadini.

Kane died following complications from a stroke. He is survived by his wife and nine children, six of whom were “welcomed through adoption and fostering.”
